About Samantha Calder

GLASS ARTIST & INSTRUCTOR

Hello! I’m Samantha — a lifelong creative and the artist behind Living Sun Glass. I’ve been working with stained glass since 2004 and teaching others to do the same since 2008. What started as a hobby with my husband has grown into a heartfelt calling to create and to teach.

MY JOURNEY WITH GLASS

Art has always played a role in my life. I once thought I’d spend my career in music, teaching, but an injury during university shifted my path. That unexpected turn led me to the visual arts — and ultimately, to stained glass.

Over the years, I’ve explored a wide range of techniques, from traditional leaded glass and copper foil to glass painting and kiln work. My pieces have been exhibited in shops, galleries, and government buildings across Ontario and Quebec, and collected by art lovers in over a dozen countries.

Layers of Craftsmanship

I’ve always been drawn to the challenge of mixing traditional techniques with creative expression — whether it’s blending painting and foil work in an intricate free-form piece or collaborating with my father to build a one-of-a-kind game board that combines wood, glass, and fused elements.

The backgammon board is a special piece that brings together several passions: traditional lead came assembly, hand-painted woodwork, and custom fused glass playing pieces. Built as a keepsake for a custom request, it reflects not only the joy of making but also the shared creativity that has shaped much of my journey.

The painted wolf panel represents a different side of my work — quieter, more intricate, and deeply expressive. Based on a paper-cutting design by Wildchild Designs (used under commercial license), this piece challenged me to explore detail and storytelling through glass painting and copper foil construction. It’s one of many projects where I’ve found deep joy in slowing down and letting the process guide me, while also navigating challenges like maintaining structural integrity and preserving the visual impact of the hollow spaces surrounding the wolf.

Each project I create — whether functional or decorative — is part of a bigger story. A story of exploration, connection, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from working with my hands.

WHY I TEACH

I believe creativity should be joyful — not perfect. That’s why my approach to teaching is grounded in experimentation and play. When something doesn’t work, it just means you’ve discovered one way that won’t work — and that’s still progress!

My goal is to demystify the process and help you feel confident creating stained glass on your own. Whether you’re a beginner or a returning maker, I’ll walk you through each step, explain how and why things work, and offer tips to make your process smoother and more rewarding.

FIND JOY IN THE PROCESS

There’s no single “right” way to make stained glass — and that’s part of the magic. We each bring our own vision, limitations, and style to the table. I’m here to help you build skills, spark ideas, and most of all, enjoy the journey of making.

💬 What Students Are Saying

“I improved immeasurably. I can’t believe how much more comfortable I was cutting my pieces. I spent probably 10% of the time I normally spend on the grinder! Thank you so much — I’m excited about improving my craft.”
